Christian Radio in Tonga
Nuku'alofa
Christian Radio FM93
Christian Radio 93FM is managed by Loni Akolo, a local Tongan man who
has been trained by UCB
Pacific Partners. Loni is a gifted Bible teacher in his Tongan language
and he has a passion to see the people of Tonga - especially the young
people - trained to live for Jesus Christ.
The goal of UCB Pacific Partners is to train local people to minister
the Gospel of Jesus Christ to their own people, so Christian radio 93FM
broadcasts few western radio programs. Instead Loni and his team make
most of the programs locally, and in the Tongan language. He has three
full-time (and paid) local staff and many part-time, volunteer announcers
for the station.
Loni and his team are constantly developing new radio programs and 'off-station'
events to help bring his listeners into a meaningful, daily relationship
with Jesus Christ.
Christian Radio 93FM was the first Christian radio station in the South
Pacific Islands and has has been broadcasting in Nuku'alofa, Tonga since
1993. After 10 years of hosting ministry teams and broadcasting out of
an old house in Nuku'alofa (Tonga's capital), UCB Pacific Partners has
recently moved into a new 'purpose-built' ministry and radio station facility.
The building contains the new radio studios behind which is the manager's
house. A separate transmitter building includes a small workshop. Futurue
construction plans include a large bathroom block and a training and accommodation
centre.
The training and accommodation centre will be the final stage of the
building project and will be used for training courses and seminars for
people from other Pacific Islands countries, as well as for people from
Tonga's 160 islands. It will also house teams from western churches that
come to Tonga to assist the local people in outreach and Christian aid
projects.
