On November 8th 1991, evangelist Erik Erikson felt God was telling
him to build a Christian TV station in Iceland. Erik applied for a TV
broadcasting licence, and finally secured a license to broadcast 24
hrs. After nine months of preparation, on 28th July 1992 went on the
air in Iceland,
In the beginning Gospel Channel had only a 10 watt transmitter. One
year later, it was upgraded to a 1000 watt transmitter with three repeaters.
Later still, a high power transmitter was added. Today 80% of the population
in Iceland can receive Gospel Channel through terrestrial transmitters
and cable systems.
In 2002 Gospel Channel launched on the Thor II satellite which provides
dedicated coverage to Scandinavian countries. In 2004 the station soutput
expanded to include the Hotbird satellite, providing coverage to both
Western & Eastern Europe, the Middle East & Northern Africa.
Then on 26th September 2005 Gospel Channel joined the line-up on the
Eurobird satellite, providing direct access to the countries of the
United Kingdom and Ireland via the Sky Digital platform.
